No one wanted to hold the second-place trophy at the GMAC swimming and diving championships Thursday.

And no one had to.

Coral Gables’ and Coral Reef’s girls’ teams each finished with 96 points and shared first-place honors at the meet held at Miami-Dade College’s North Campus.

On the boys’ side, the champion was clear-cut.

Led by Robert Ballestas’ victories in the 200 freestyle (1:46.30) and 100-yard butterfly events (51.16), Columbus secured the boys’ championship with 95 points.

Coral Gables won the 200 medley (1:56.16) and 200 freestyle relays (1:46.75) to highlight its overall performance on the girls’ side. Coral Reef secured victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:55.52) and also got strong efforts from Cloe Bedard-Khalid, a champion in the 200 individual medley (2:12.19), and Nicole Hunnewell, a champion in the 100 freestyle (56.04).

American’s Omaira German and Hialeah-Miami Lakes’ Maria Perez were among the top individual performers in the girls’ meet.

German won the 100 butterfly (1:00.58) and 50 freestyle (25.69), and Perez took home gold in the 200 freestyle (2:01.54) and 500 freestyle (5:29.05).

In addition to Ballestas’ individual wins, Columbus also earned first place in the 200 medley (1:43.61) and 400 free relays (3:19.92).
