Ferguson gets big district win over Varela
Ferguson sealed a critical District 15-8A victory against Varela 20-18 Monday afternoon at Tropical Park in a game that was picked up with 10:20 remaining after inclement weather postponed the Thursday affair.
The decisive score came early in the fourth quarter Thursday night when Linos Hall ran in a 68-yard touchdown plus ensuing two-point conversion to put Ferguson up 20-12.
The Falcons (4-1, 2-0) then needed a stop after giving up a Justin Vargas touchdown run to cap a 17-play, 68-yard drive for Varela (2-3, 1-1) on Thursday. They got it Monday when they stuffed Anthony Guevara on a fullback dive on the two-point attempt that would’ve tied it with four minutes to play.
Varela had one final chance, but after driving to the Ferguson 45-yard line with under a minute, threw four consecutive incomplete passes.
Ferguson is now tied atop the district with Belen, which also completed a district win Monday.
Gianni McCrea rushed for a game-high 111 yards and an early touchdown.
