Late score, stop fuel Norland win over Northwestern

Norland coach Daryle Heidelburg knew it was a matter of time.

His team’s defense didn’t budge.

But the Vikings’ offense continually failed to provide the decisive score — until overtime.

Junior quarterback Rodrick Robinson’s 10-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Damion Barry, coupled with a special teams stop lifted Norland to a 17-16 overtime victory over Northwestern Monday evening at Traz Powell Stadium.

The Bulls answered Norland’s overtime score with a touchdown of their own when freshman quarterback Tutu Atwell swung a pass to junior Patrick Banks for a 5-yard touchdown. But a low snap on the extra point forced a rushed incomplete pass that sealed the win for Norland.

“That winning touchdown pass was something we practice all the time and we executed it great,” Heidelburg said. “[Barry] had been on the bench because he hadn’t been playing well, but he stepped up and made the big play we needed.”

The game was one of six to resume Monday after inclement weather suspended it this past Thursday. Norland and Norhtwestern were tied at 10 with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter.

Norland’s defense completed a stellar overall effort that began Thursday by limiting Norland to 14 total yards and helping the Vikings overcome a 10-0 first quarter deficit.

Neither team was able to make much happen offensively throughout a scoreless fourth quarter. Norland missed a field goal and was stopped on downs twice in Northwestern territory.

“We had more chances to win in regulation, but it was good to see the kids pull through,” Heidelburg said.

Both teams face a tough road ahead with each of their next two games coming against national powerhouses, Booker T. Washington and Central.

But Monday’s victory gives Norland (3-1, 2-0 in District 16-6A) a very good chance for a return to the postseason if it can defeat Carol City — its only other district opponent following this Saturday’s game against Central. The Vikings went 3-7 last year after four consecutive playoff seasons that included one state championship and one state runner-up finish.

Northwestern (4-1, 1-1 in district) needs to win its remaining district games (Central, Homestead) or win at least one and hope for help from other district foes if it is to avoid missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

“Every win in this district is crucial,” Heidelburg said. “It wasn’t hard at all to get the kids up for this game because they knew what was at stake.”
