Miami Central Rockets open district play with solid win against Homestead

Central kicked off a stretch of four consecutive district matchups with a well-rounded 49-0 victory over Homestead at Harris Field.

Quarterback Jerrod Thomas threw three touchdown passes — two of them to top recruit Da’Vante Phillips. Anthony Jones caught a 28-yard touchdown pass and ran for 48 yards and another score for the two-time defending Class 6A state champion Rockets (5-1, 1-0 District 16-6A).

Cedric Miller rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown, and Malik Witherspoon capped the scoring with a 55-yard touchdown run.

Homestead (1-4, 0-2) was shut out for the second game in a row and finished with minus-14 rushing yards.
