Belen Jesuit High names Don Chaney Sr. as its new head football coach
Wednesday turned out to be an awfully big day for the Chaney family.
Not long after Belen Jesuit running back Don Chaney Jr. made official what he had been saying for a very long time, that he would take his football talents to the University of Miami, the school announced that his father, Don Chaney Sr. would be the new head coach and director of football operations for the Wolverines.
Chaney Sr. served as the interim head coach for the final three games of the 2019 season when Eddie Delgado stepped down and emerged as the top candidate following the interview process.
“I’m looking forward to this opportunity and to continue to grow the football program at Belen,” said Chaney, Sr. who has been coaching at Belen since 2014. “I’ve never known a man worth his salt who, in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn’t appreciate the grind and the discipline. I am blessed and look forward to the years ahead.”
Chaney Sr. is a former receiver for the University of South Carolina and went on to play for the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles before injuries ended his career. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Barry University in Miami.
“Coach Chaney is a person of integrity, an excellent role model who places great value in the education and the development of the whole person,” Belen athletic director Carlos Barquin said. “I look forward to working with him as he takes on this new role at the school.”
