Columbus football bounces back with big win over Norland

Columbus got back on track after a lopsided loss to Central by pounding Norland 29-6 at Tropical Park Stadium behind quarterback Tucker Beirne.

Beirne completed 9 of 22 passes for 160 yards and fired four touchdown passes as the Explorers, ranked No.9 in the Miami Herald South Florida poll, moved to 4-1 while the Vikings, ranked No.12, fell to 2-1.

“A good solid all-around effort [Friday] and I was especially happy for Tucker,” Columbus coach Chris Merritt said. “We really needed him to start hitting on some deep passes and he did just that.”

After hitting Nick Hernandez on a 22-yard scoring pass in the first quarter, Beirne fired a 49-yard touchdown pass to Jerron Rollins for a 16-0 lead.
