Thanksgiving weekend was not a good one for Miami Springs girls soccer coach William Drew. That’s because, as it usually does, bad news travels quickly.

That’s what happened when his phone rang and he got the news that Gabi Cimino, his best player and leading scorer over the last two years, had suffered a significant knee injury while playing for her club team, the Coral Gables Storm, at the Disney Showcase Tournament at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday.

Cimino, who was the Miami Herald’s 3A-1A Female Soccer Player of the Year as a sophomore last year, got the sobering news following an MRI on Monday that it was a complete tear of the ACL in her left knee. She is out six to nine months.

Minus her and several other starters (who were at another out-of-town tournament), Drew’s Hawks founds themselves unexpectedly locked in a 2-2 tie at home against Hialeah-Miami Lakes on Wednesday afternoon with 12 minutes left.

It was only then that, led my Mia Palma, normally the team’s starting goalkeeper who he had to move up to fill Cimino’s forward position, Springs knocked in three goals to pull out a 5-2 district victory.

“Nope, not a good phone call for sure,” said Drew. “That’s 50-plus goals out the window, but we’ll just do whatever we have to in order to adjust and move on without her. The most important thing is that we show our support for Gabi and make sure she does all the things to properly rehab because she still has another year left and we want her back healthy and ready to go next year.”

Adalyah Blatch and Jade Jagessar had the other two goals for Springs which moved its record to 4-1.
