High school football playoffs began this week in Florida, but there’s another tournament taking place in South Florida this weekend that goes toward a bigger cause.

The Ari Arteaga Foundation is hosting its inaugural “Be The Light Bowl” flag football fundraiser at the Kendall Boys and Girls Club on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In all, there will be 48 teams — 24 at the high school level, 12 of seventh and eighth graders, and 12 of fifth and sixth graders — with up to 10 people playing a tournament-style matchup with a minimum of five games per team.

The foundation was made in honor of the late Ari Arteaga, a football and baseball player at Columbus High School who died in a single-car crash on July 28. He was 16. The foundation’s goal, according to its website, is “to spread his spirit by helping children and families overcome obstacles they may face due to unforeseen hardships. Our goal is to shine Ari’s light on their path of need.”

The cost to enter in the tournament was $500 per team. General admission tickets to watch are $5. All proceeds from the event go to the “Be The Light” Foundation.
