Coral Gables makes easy work of Coral Park

Coral Park was not supposed to offer much resistance when it took the field against Coral Gables on Friday afternoon. That’s exactly what happened.

One week after the Cavaliers nearly turned in a miracle fourth-quarter rally against Booker T. Washington before falling five points short, they came out and made very quick work of the Rams.

Gables scored five touchdowns before the game was even 10 minutes old and then cruised to a 42-0 win at Gables High School in a District 14-8A contest that was shortened to a six-minute second quarter and two four-minute running clock quarters in the second half.

Gables quarterback Gerald Williams racked up a game’s worth of stats in the first quarter alone as he completed 9 of his 10 passes for 165 yards. He had four touchdown passes — two to Anthony Jackson from 28 and 17 yards, a 19 yarder Alex Bell Jr. and a 7-yard toss to Terrance Huggins. Jonathan Ford had a 43-yard touchdown run and Jermaine Witherspoon had a 48-yard interception return for a score to wrap up the scoring onslaught.

“Just a good job of coming out and doing what was necessary today and taking care of our business,” said Gables head coach Roger Pollard, who saw him team improve to 5-3, 3-0. “Now we’ve got a week off to get ready for a big game in a few weeks.”

Pollard referred to Gables’ big showdown contest against Columbus on Oct. 26 at Tropical Park that will decide the district championship.
