A District 15-8A showdown between Coral Reef and Belen Jesuit turned into the Danny Esteban show on Friday afternoon.

Not even a third-quarter lightning delay could slow him down as the Belen running back scored all four of his team’s touchdowns as the host Wolverines cruised to a 26-6 victory over the Barracudas. The win raised Belen’s overall record to 3-2 but kept them undefeated in the district at 2-0. Coral Reef dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district play.

Esteban scored three of his touchdowns in the first half as Belen blew out to a 19-0 lead at the break. He capped off a short 40-yard Wolverine drive to open the game scoring from 2 yards out and then scored from 2 yards out again midway through the second quarter to capping an eight play, 78-yard drive to make it 12-0.

When the Barracudas fumbled on the very next play after the kickoff to give Belen the ball at the 21, Esteban carried the ball on four of the Wolverines’ five plays, scoring again from two yards out 1:55 before halftime. Esteban scored his fourth touchdown, this time from 3 yards out with 3:40 left in the third quarter.

“Being a fullback, it’s usually just about grinding those tough short-yardage yards out so I’m just happy I got the call down around the goal line so much today,” said Esteban. “But a running back doesn’t get it done without the O-line doing it up front so I give it up to them today and our defense for really shutting the other team down and now we want to just keep this thing going.”

Coral Reef avoided the shutout when quarterback Milton Calafell snuck over from a yard out with 6:30 left in the game.
