For the first time in program history, Hialeah Gardens football starts 3-0

Most teams, especially the big shots like Central, Carol City and Northwestern, would not make any kind of a big deal about a 3-0 start to a season.

But when you are Hialeah Gardens? It’s a very big deal.

Following their 68-25 rout of Varela on Thursday afternoon at Varela High School, the Gladiators, now in their 10th season since the school opened its doors in 2009, broke into the record books of their brief history as it marked the first time they’ve started the season with three consecutive wins.

Granted, wins over Westland Hialeah, Coral Park and Varela isn’t exactly a daunting gauntlet and much tougher district games against North Miami Beach, North Miami and Hialeah lie ahead. Coach Greg Magner will take it regardless.

“It’s all about just establishing family values and teaching the kids to be selfless, respect everybody including each other and be competitive,” said Magner, now in his third season at HG after serving as Archbishop Curley’s head coach for nearly 25 years. “We understand our most challenging games are still in front of us but I’m still excited for the kids here who have worked hard and made a little history today.”

Magner can mainly thank a potent offense that thrashed a hapless Varela defense all day long as the Gladiators rolled up 398 yards on the ground and 61 more passing.

Thanks to a nice first quarter by quarterback Kevin Medina (7-of-10, 153 yards, 3 touchdowns), Varela (0-3) actually led 19-16 after one quarter.

But huge days from quarterback Darian Hernandez (4-of-5, 61 yards, one TD passing, 6 carries, 89 yards and four TDs on the ground) and running back Christian Gomez-Gonzalez (8 carries, 151 yards, 2 TDs) helped Gardens score 52 unanswered points over the next three quarters.
