A coral-ridden course shortened the strides of runners Thursday at the Dade County Youth Fair Championships. But the Belen Jesuit and Ferguson cross-country teams claimed boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively, despite the rocky course and muggy air in the meet at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. Coral Reef’s Kurt Convey claimed the boys’ individual title, and Ransom Everglades’ Lauren Archer finished first in the girls’ 5K.

“The girls had a very good day,” Ferguson coach Ryan Raposo said. “It was one of those days where we knew there could be a few teams contending for the championship. I told them you just have to get in the mix.”

Coral Reef’s Carlin Berryhill and Belen’s Ryan Rodriguez followed Convey’s 15:58 finish. Gulliver’s Alyssa Pujal’s and Ferguson’s Aylwyn Hernandez trailed Archer’s 19:23 time.

“I really wanted to stay in the front with [Pujals],” Archer said. “I wanted to stay closer to her and not have to catch her. I just really wanted to start the season out well.”

Coral Reef and Ransom Everglades finished second and third overall in the girls’ 5K. Coral Reef also had the second overall boys’ score, followed by Ferguson and Ransom Everglades.

“The course is known for being a little slow,” Convey said. “It was a pretty hot and muggy day, so I wasn’t looking forward to it. But I wanted to be youth fair champion.”

“As it was getting to the two mile, I felt strong and pulled away and didn’t really look back.”
