Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Mater Academy baseball team advanced to the Class 6A state semifinals for the second consecutive season. Pitchers Tyler Perez and Kevin Fuentes each had impressive outings to lead the Lions to wins over Doral Academy and Jensen Beach.

The Brito baseball team reached the state final four in Class 2A for the second consecutive season. Christian Crowe went five innings and struck out six, and Alex Nino delivered a key triple to lead the Panthers to a 6-1 win over Boca Raton Christian in the regional final.


Kylan Becker, Coral Reef, softball: Becker went 5 for 5 with three RBI to help the Barracudas beat Douglas and advance to the Class 8A state semifinal for the second time in three seasons.

Nikkia Benitez, Westminster Christian softball: Benitez hit a two-run home run that sparked a big inning for the Warriors in a 11-3 win over Moore Haven in the Class 3A state semifinals.

Devin Decker, Palmetto, boys’ volleyball: Decker had 16 kills and 10 digs to lead the Panthers to a win over Southwest that clinched a berth in the state tournament.

Peter Cancio, Columbus, boys’ volleyball: Cancio had 15 kills and eight digs to lead the Explorers to a win over Miami High that clinched a berth in the state tournament.

Alex Silva, Mourning, boys’ volleyball: Silva had eight kills and three blocks to lead the Sharks to a win over South Broward and a berth at state.
