American Heritage golfer Kristian Caparros wins medalist honors at Olympia Invitational

Even without Jorge Garcia, ranked No. 5 in the POLO national golf rankings, the American Heritage boys’ team gave Winter Park Circle Christian all it could handle at the Olympia Invitational on Saturday. Garcia, a Florida commit, was on a return trip from China, where he finished 23rd at the World Amateur Championships, leaving Kristian Caparros to pick up the slack with a meet-low 5-under-par67 and claim medalist honors at Hammock’s Beach Ocean Course in Palm Coast.

Ty Strafaci finished tied for third (68), but it wasn’t enough to stop Circle Christian from beating Heritage 295-307 for the team title.

Despite Caparros shooting his fourth consecutive round under par on Saturday, Heritage coach Brandt Moser believes Caparros, ranked No.11 nationally, is saving his best for the Class 2A state championship Tournament.

“As good as 67 sounds, Kristian left a minimum two strokes out there,” Moser said. “On the first hole, he hit the pin on the second shot and it bounced out. The kid was on fire. It is absolutely scary. He is just playing at a whole different level this season.”

Caparros is poised to improve on his third-place finish at the Class 2A state finals last season, when the Patriots finished runner-up to Ponte Vedra. On Saturday, Ponte Vedra finished fourth (607) in the team standings.

Olympia Invitational: 1. Kristian Caparros (AH) 67, 2. Hong (CC) 71, 3. Strafaci (AH) 68, Springer (Mitchell) 68, 5. Colanta (CC) 72, 6. Kennerly (Ben) 73, Sherlin (Hendersonville) 74, Membrino (PV) 71, 9. Grula (LH) 74, 10. Leveque (LH) 73, Doner (Ben) 73, Leffew (VB) 71, Hoskins (CC) 74.
