Cortez Grace’s quarterback sneak lifts Deerfield Beach over Blanche Ely
In a storied, neighborhood rivalry billed this year as the inaugural “McDougle Bowl,” Deerfield Beach sophomore quarterback Cortez Grace scored the winning touchdown on a 1-yard sneak on third-and-goal with four seconds remaining to lift the Bucks over Blanche Ely 14-12 on Friday night.
The Bucks (2-1), who struggled on offense all night, started the winning, 12-play drive at their own 10-yard line with 3:05 remaining, facing a 12-7 deficit.
“I felt that if we played defense and hung in with them, our chance would come,” Bucks coach Allen Jackson said. “This is a young team. They just had to believe, believe, believe.”
The Tigers (0-2) dominated statistically, outgaining the Bucks 374-210 in total yardage and making 18 first downs to Deerfield Beach’s nine.
But the Tigers were unable deliver the knockout blow after leading 12-7 at halftime.
Ely’s Robert Williams was the game’s leading rusher with 100 yards on 12 carries, scoring both first-half touchdowns.
The Bucks took an early 7-0 lead on a Kobe Farris 6-yard run after an Ely botched snap on a punt formation gave Deerfield Beach a first-and-goal for its first possession of the game.
The teams combined for 178 yards in penalties.
