JACKSONVILLE – Change is good, but not when it comes to the Miami Northwestern girls track team.

The Bulls won their seventh consecutive state track title, a state record, and made it 17 out of the last 18 years that they have finished as either the state champion or runnerup. This one, held on the University of North Florida campus, was as easy as they’ve ever had.

For the second year in a row, Northwestern set an all-time high for points in a state track meet, finishing with 155, one more than last year’s record total. The Bulls were so dominating, they could left the track before the afternoon running events began and still have taken home the state trophy. With a second place finish in the 4 x 800 relay and solid showing in the field events, Northwestern had 39 points before the first running event began. That still would have been enough to finish ahead of runnerup Lakewood Ranch (30.5) and third-place finisher Ponte Vedra (30).

Northwestern was dominant in the dashes and hurdles, scoring at least 16 points in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races as well as the two hurdle events. They totaled 96 points in those five races, winning all five and gaining plenty of support in each.

“It never gets old because there’s so much more to winning,” said Northwestern coach Carmen Jackson. “It’s about getting the kids ready academically and athletically for college. It’s very important that we take what God has given these kids which is athletics and add a proper academic structure to it and you’ll have kids that will have a lot of open doors ahead of them.”

That especially holds true for the team’s only four seniors – Alexis Harrell, Shamaria Lovett, Lenneshia Gilbert and Lakayla Harris – all of whom have committed to colleges. All were contributors to the Bulls’ record point total on Saturday.

Harris brought home a pair of runnerup finishes in the 100 and 200 (both times getting edged out by teammate Twanisha Terry, only a sophomore, and was part of both winning 400 and 1600 meter relay teams.

“It was a team effort by everyone,” Harris said. “We had some individuals come through for us and helped others. Our team helps each other and always encourages others. That’s why we’re able to score so many points in these meets.

“Our coaches are always motivating us. They give us such good practice ethics that makes us stronger and faster. With only four of us graduating this year, I want to encourage our younger athletes to keep this going.”

Tragedy marred an otherwise competitive meet run in ideal weather, when longtime Estero coach Jeff Sommer collapsed and died from an apparent heart attack. It happened as Sommer watched his girls 4 x 800 relay team finished first in its race, beating out favored Northwestern by seven seconds.
