Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Alonzo and Tracy Mourning boys’ volleyball team won its first GMAC championship. The Sharks beat perennial contenders Sunset, Southwest and Palmetto. Senior setter Erick Nascimento’s 25 assists and nine digs, and senior outside hitter Carlos Jimenez’s nine kills and seven digs led Mourning in the championship round.


Sergio Lopez, South Dade, baseball: Lopez went 2 for 4 with two home runs and five RBI to lead the Bucs to a 11-9, extra-inning, District 16-8A championship-clinching victory over Palmetto.

Giovanni Arriera, Westland Hialeah, baseball: Arriera threw a one-hitter and struck out 11 to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 win over Reagan and help Westland clinch its first berth in the regional playoffs.

Kiley Kross, Palmetto, softball: Kross went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and three RBI to lead the Panthers to a 9-5 win over Coral Gables in the Region 4-8A quarterfinals.

Tayler Sanchez, TERRA, softball: Sanchez struck out 10 and recorded a shutout in a 1-0 win over Miami Springs in the Region 4-6A quarterfinals.

Thomas Burns, Northwestern, boys’ track and field: Burns won the 110 and 300 hurdles at the Region 4-3A championships.

Timetria Mitchell, Northwestern, girls’ track and field: Mitchell swept the hurdles to lead Northwestern to the Region 4-3A championship.

Angelica Gutierrez, Mater Academy, flag football: Gutierrez ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns and threw for a touchdown.
