Mike Manasco named football coach at Palmetto

Five years after helping start the football program at Westland Hialeah, Mike Manasco is getting a chance to coach his alma mater.

Palmetto announced Tuesday that it has hired Manasco as its new coach.

Manasco, a graduate of Palmetto and former assistant coach at Southridge, became the first coach at Westland Hialeah in 2009 where he coached the first five seasons of the program going 15-34 during that span.

“It’s an honor to coach at my alma mater and continue the tradition of excellence Palmetto has in academics and athletics,” Manasco said.

Manasco replaces former coach Matt Dixon and takes over a Palmetto squad that went 3-7 this past season and has not made the playoffs since 2008.

The Panthers are the second team in District 16-8A to change coaches so far this offseason following Coral Reef’s hiring of Billy Rolle on Monday.

MORE FOOTBALL

After spending seven seasons leading the Archbishop Carroll football program to success before leaving after the 2010 season, Jorge Zagales is headed back to South Florida after being named the new head coach at Doral Academy Charter this week.

Zagales, who left to coach in Ohio for three seasons, replaces Steve Smith who resigned following a winless 0-9 season for the Firebirds who were outscored 279-65 during the season.

“I loved it in Ohio but it was partially a family thing for me coming back and I’m just excited to be back in South Florida again and taking over the Doral program,” said Zagales who is a South Florida native and helped lead Dover (Ohio) High School to a state semifinal appearance in 2012 as the defensive line coach. “Doral is a tremendous school with a great administration committed to being successful. We both wanted each other so it’s a great fit.”
