The South Dade wrestling team, winners of four consecutive state championships and a Miami-Dade County-best 12 overall, are striving for a new goal.

The Bucs are aiming to win their first state dual meet title in the inaugural season that the FHSAA is holding this format.

South Dade won both its matches in the dual meet regionals Thursday, defeating Columbus 66-3 and Southwest 62-15 to advance to next weekend’s first-ever state dual meet wrestling championship.

The Bucs have a chance to win two state titles starting with the dual meet tournament at Kissimmee Osceola on Jan. 19-20 and the traditional individual tournament to also be held in Kissimmee at Silver Spurs Arena on March 1-3.

The Bucs cruised to the wins led by two-time state champion Brevin Balmeceda (152 pounds), who pinned Southwest’s Sergio Valdes in the second period of their match. South Dade followed that up with two major decisions, one from Todd Perry at 160 pounds and another from Mikaelle Fundora at 170.

Corey Harvey (182) and Kenneth Crouse (220) pinned their opponents in less than a minute. Trayvonne Jackson would keep it going with another pin in the heavyweight class. After Jacob Delgado (106) received a forfeit, Luis Peraza (113), a defending state champion, Bretli Reyna (120) and Tyler Orta (126) all pinned their opponents.

Southwest, which beat Southridge in the first round, recorded its first win in the 11th match of the meet when Julian Hernandez (132) defeated Joshua Swan in overtime. Alex Urquiza (138) and Andy Dematas would also triumph for the Eagles as they pinned their South Dade opponents.

South Dade will take on Broward County powerhouse Cypress Bay in the Class 3A quarterfinals at state. Coral Springs also advanced in 3A and will take on Wellington.

In Class 1A, Cardinal Gibbons advanced to the state quarterfinals and will take on fellow Broward contender Somerset Academy next Friday.
