Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Coral Gables baseball team picked up four wins in the Gold Division of the HSBN March Madness tournament and won the championship. The Cavaliers beat Flanagan, Belen, Westminster Academy and Mater Academy over the course of the tournament.


Kevin Perez, Goleman, baseball: Perez pitched a four-hitter while striking out seven to lead the Gators to a 1-0 win over Fairview and the championship of the National Classic.

Jose Garcia, SLAM Academy, baseball: Garcia hit two home runs to lead the Titans to a 6-5 comeback win that capped a 4-0 tournament and the championship of the HSBN March Madness Black bracket.

Jessica Rivera, Gulliver, softball: Rivera won Outstanding Offensive Player in the Blue Division of the Kissimmee Klassic after hitting .588 with two home runs and seven runs scored.

Megan Rodriguez, Florida Christian, softball: Rodriguez won Outstanding Offensive Player in the Gold Division of the Kissimmee Klassic by hitting .667 with five RBI and six runs scored.

Carlin Berryhill, Coral Reef, boys’ track and field: Berryhill won the 1,600 meters at the FSU Relays.

Taranique Alexander and Chanel Dawson, Northwestern, girls’ track and field: Alexander won the 100 hurdles and triple jump and Dawson won the shot put and discus to help the Bulls win the Miramar Relays.

Daniel Sainz, Southwest, boys’ volleyball: Sainz led Southwest to a runner-up finish at the Bishop Moore Spring Sting tournament with 36 kills, 10 blocks, nine aces, and 18 digs.

Jesse Fuchs, La Salle, boys’ lacrosse: Fuchs had four goals to lead the Royal Lions to a 6-4 win against St. Brendan.

Sabrina Cabrera, Monsignor Pace, flag football: Cabrera scored two touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a 24-0 win over Archbishop McCarthy.
