Doral baseball coach Suarez gets 400th victory

In his first year coaching at Doral Academy, longtime baseball coach Ralph Suarez is hoping to turn the Firebirds into championship contenders.

Doral took a step toward that goal Thursday by securing a milestone victory for Suarez.

Suarez notched his 400th career coaching victory when Doral edged reigning Class 6A state champion Mater Academy 5-4 in nine innings at Westland Gardens Park.

Doral (6-5-1) secured the No. 3 seed in a tough District 16-6A race behind TERRA and Belen Jesuit with the win.

Suarez, who won four state championships at Brito and led them to three state runner-up finishes and was part of one state baseball and four state softball titles as an assistant coach at Gulliver, improved his career record to 400-114-8.

“It’s a great accomplishment and it’s a credit to a lot of the great people around me over the years,” Suarez said. “My wife has been a big support for me for many years ever since I started at Brito in 1988 until this year when Doral gave me this opportunity.

“I’ve been very lucky to have the opportunities that I’ve had to achieve something like this.”
