Deerfield Beach names Glenn football coach

Deerfield Beach didn’t look too far to find its new football coach.

Jevon Glenn, who has spent the past eight years at the school as an assistant coach, was named the coach of the Bucks on Monday.

Glenn, an All-Broward basketball player at Blanche Ely as a senior in 1996, replaces Allen Jackson after he resigned in December.

Jackson was 23-18 in four seasons at Deerfield Beach.

“I’m very humbled but excited for this opportunity,” said Glenn, an FAU graduate who is also an assistant coach on Deerfield Beach’s track and boys’ basketball team.

“I’ve been at Deerfield Beach under three different coaches so so I’ve seen what works here and what doesn’t.

“We return 15 starters, so I expect us to be pretty good. They’ve been working since Dec. 26. We’re hungry for that state championship and expecting big things.”

SIGNING

Aaron Franco, a midfielder and co-captain of the boys’ soccer team, became the first student-athlete from Scheck Hillel Community School to sign a National Letter of Intent with a Division I-A school on Monday when he signed with the University of Maryland.

Franco, who also plays for the Boca United U18 boys’ travel team, helped lead the Lions to the state final four last season where they lost to Orlando First Baptist. This season, Hillel lost to SLAM 3-2 in a regional semifinal game decided by penalty kicks.

BASEBALL

A pair of South Florida players — Killian senior catcher Herbert Iser and West Broward junior pitcher Anthony Molina — were among the first 13 players selected for the annual Under Armour All-America Baseball Game to be played Aug. 15 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The game will eventually have 40 players on its roster and will be broadcast nationally. Both Iser and Molina have committed to play at the University of Miami.
