Gibbons, Ely to clash for boys’ Big 8 title

No matter what Dillard threw at Cardinal Gibbons sharpshooter Maverick Rowan, an ESPN four-star prospect, in the BCAA Big 8 boys’ semifinals on Friday, Rowan had an answer.

In a highlight-reel game-high 29-point performance, it was Rowan’s 14-point third quarter that was the telling blow in Gibbons’ 66-62 victory at Fort Lauderdale High.

Rowan’s big night preceded Blanche Ely defeating McArthur 81-73 in the other semifinal, setting up a showdown between USA Today Super 25 No.12 Ely (21-0) and No.15 Gibbons (25-0) in the championship game on Saturday, with National High School Invitational Tournament implications hanging in the balance.

“Tonight we had more at stake,” said Rowan, a transfer from Pennsylvania. “We knew we had to come out in the first three or four minutes in the third quarter and have a big burst. That is what we wanted to have after halftime. I put in a lot of hard work. I don’t put it in for nothing. Ely will be a great contest. They are strong and quick. It should be a good game.”

If not for Rowan’s third quarter, the talk of the game would have been Dillard’s Raiquan Gray’s fourth quarter, when he scored all of his 13 points to nearly wreck the Gibbons-Ely showdown.

Gibbons guard Jose Morales finished with nine points and six assists. Richard McIntosh added nine points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Wright led Dillard with 16 points.

Ely got a career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds from Therrell Gosier and pulled away in the third quarter. Javon Heastie added 19 points. Derric Jean led McArthur with 26 points.
