Miramar hires Senatus to coach football team

Miramar High hired a new football coach in the wake of a tumultuous 2014 season. Longtime Booker T. Washington assistant coach Pierre Senatus, a member of the Tornadoes’ coaching staff for all four of their state championships, was hired to coach the Patriots.

For Senatus, 37, it is his first head-coaching job following a nine-year stint at Booker T. in which he served as the team’s defensive line coach and was a part of the Tornadoes’ state championship in 2007 and state titles the past three seasons that included a national championship in 2013. Booker T. will enter next season on the state’s longest active winning streak — 41 games.

“I found out about the job becoming available a little after we played our bowl game, and I spoke to [Booker T. coach] Tim [Harris Jr.] about it,” Senatus said. “He was the guy who pushed me to go for it when Miramar reached out to me. I said why not.”

Senatus coached wrestling for four years at Booker T. and was also the team’s strength and conditioning coach, serving under Harris Jr. this past season before serving under former Tornadoes’ coaches, Tim Harris, Sr. and Earl Tillman.

Senatus’ hiring comes a little over three months following the resignation of former Miramar coach Matthew Strout, who later caused a major stir bringing up allegations of academic fraud, impermissible benefits and illegal participation of ineligible players.

Following principal Maria Formoso’s decision to self-report to the Broward County School Board, the Patriots forfeited their participation in last year’s playoffs following a 7-3 season in which they finished district runner-up to eventual Class 8A state semifinalist Pembroke Pines Flanagan.

Players and coaches including then-interim coach A.J. Scott denied the allegations, but the school has since been the subject of an ongoing investigation by local law enforcement.

BASEBALL

Mater Academy senior Christian Cabrera signed with Broward college. Cabrera hit .484 last season, helping the Lions win the Class 6A title.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

▪ GMAC quarterfinal — Southridge 72, American 64: Shooters sometimes misfire. Passers can be intercepted. But athleticism doesn’t slump, and the ability of Southridge (17-6) to run, jump and defend was evident in its win over host American (18-5).

Southridge guards Canaan Bartley (23 points) and Raquan Mitchell (22 points) made their presence felt, playing at break-neck speed. Mitchell, a 6-1 senior shooting guard, was especially impressive. His leaping ability — Southridge coach John Herron estimates it’s over 40 inches — is a show-stopper.

“He’s probably the best athlete in the county,” Herron said. “He’s averaging 22 points a game, and we don’t run a single play for him. Some people know about him, and a lot of people don’t.”

Herron said his guards are among the best in the county, and he is counting on that backcourt to pay dividends in the GMAC semifinals against 7-1 center Zach Brown of Miami Beach.

▪ GMAC quarterfinal — Miami Beach 51, Booker T. Washington 44: Brown led Miami Beach with a triple-double — 23 points, 16 rebounds and 11 blocks — as the Hi-Tides improved to 13-10.

BTW (18-6) led 44-43 when Brown rebounded his own miss and dunked to give Beach a 45-44 advantage it never relinquished.

Brown blocked a layup attempt at the other end, and 6-4 senior wing Francisco Gallo did the rest, scoring all six of his points in the final 45 seconds on a layup and four free throws.
