Jose Morales hit the go-ahead jumper with 3.8 seconds left and Maverick Rowan added a game-high 20 points as the Cardinal Gibbons boys’ basketball team (17-0), ranked a school-best No. 15 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national poll, held off Zion Lutheran 53-51 for the Kingdom of the Sun Tournament title.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Tarvarus McFadden, American Heritage, football: The FSU commit and Lockheed Martin Air Defender of the Year returned four kickoffs for 149 yards including a 87-yard for a score and added an interception to spark a second-half comeback bid for the East team, which fell short 39-36 at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Jessica Lizano, Cypress Bay, girls’ basketball: The sophomore standout had a game-high 17 points to lead the Lightning (10-5) over Jupiter 43-35 at the Park Vista Holiday Tournament

Shawn Burgess-Becker, Monarch, football: The hard-hitting Alabama commit had four tackles to lead Team Highlight over Team Armour 46-6 at the Under Armour All-American Bowl.

Keavon Mitchell, Flanagan, boys’ basketball: Mitchell had a team-high 17 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the Falcons over Taravella 74-68 for the Deerfield Beach Winter Classic title.

Mary Katherine Moore, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ basketball: the 6-5 center had a game-high 22 points to lead the Raiders (12-3) over host Deerfield Beach 55-36 in the Deerfield Beach Winter Classic finals.

Eric Steigelfest, North Broward Prep, boys’ basketball: Steigelfest had a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles over Indian Rocks Christian 62-53 at the King’s Academy Invitational.

Andrew Boynton and Leslie Dalger, Westminster Academy, boys’ basketball: Boynton and Dalger each tied for a team-high 18 points to help the Lions (12-5) hold off Piper 62-60.

Sebastian Horvath, Western, boys’ soccer: Horvath scored the winning penalty kick as the Wildcats (13-1-2) beat Blanche Ely 1-0 (5-3 on penalty kicks) at the Deerfield Beach Holiday Tournament.

Bricellis Jimenez, Everglades, girls’ basketball: Jimenez had a game-high 16 points to lead the Gators over Coral Springs 60-44 for the Hollywood Christian New Year’s Classic title.

Exodo Pelcastre, Fort Lauderdale, boys’ soccer: Pelcastre had three goals to help shorthanded Fort Lauderdale rally for a 5-3 victory over South Plantation in the Deerfield Beach Holiday Tournament third-place game.
