After a disappointing loss in their season finale against St. Thomas Aquinas, Flanagan (8-2) quickly returned to dominace by rolling past Piper (9-2) in the Region 3-8A quarterfinals.
The Falcons’ defense picked up its fourth shutout of the season, holding the Bengals to just 87 yards of total offense and forcing four turnovers. Flanagan faces Deerfield Beach next Friday.
Flanagan had taken an early 7-0 lead before lightning forced an hour-long weather delay toward the end of the first quarter. After both teams returned to the field, the Falcons – led by quarterback Kalyn “Cato” Nelson – picked up where they left off and scored three times in the second quarter to jump out to a 26-0 lead at the half.
Kalyn Nelson: Rushed for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes to propel the Falcons offense to a big win.
Devin Bush Jr.: Bounced off of several defenders and raced away for a 47-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Falcons a spark.
THEY SAID IT
“I’m proud of our guys. They rose to the task and this win gets us back to the basics – back to playing our style of football.” – Flanagan coach Devin Bush
