Champagnet rallies to win A-Rod Classic title

Just when it looked like Coral Springs Christian would steal the A-Rod Basketball Classic title from Miami Champagnat, Lions’ senior guard Jaron Cornish hit one of the biggest shots of his career.

With Champagnat trailing 43-41 with 1:30 left, Cornish hit the go-ahead three-pointer as the Lions outlasted Coral Springs Christian 46-43 at Miami Columbus on Saturday.

“I was very confident because my teammates want the ball in my hands,” Cornish said. “I was looking to score, help the team, and I got the open shot. It was a tough game. We just stayed confident and stayed discipline. A win like this shows us where we are.”

Champagnat’s Nashad Mackey (12 points) hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left, but the victory wasn’t assured until Coral Springs Christian’s Alowei Talent missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Jeffrey Prophete led the Crusaders (6-3) with a game-high 19 points. Abule Abadi added 13 points.
