American Heritage QB Torrance Gibson in running for Mr. Florida Football

Plantation American Heritage quarterback Torrance Gibson is in the running for the state’s most prestigious individual high school football award.

Gibson, an Ohio State commitment, was named a finalist for the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Florida Football Award on Monday when the association named its winners for each of the state’s eight classifications.

Gibson was the winner for Class 5A after leading the Patriots to the state championship round for the second consecutive season.

Gibson has completed 104 of 224 passes for 1,815 yards and 19 touchdowns with only two interceptions. Gibson has also rushed for 970 yards on 132 carries and 12 touchdowns.

Past local winners of this award are Miami Central running back Dalvin Cook (2013), Miami Norland running back Duke Johnson (2011) and Miami Northwestern quarterback Jacory Harris (2007).

Miami Booker T. Washington coach Tim Harris Jr. (Class 4A) and Pembroke Pines Flanagan coach Devin Bush (Class 8A) were each named winners in their respective classes and are finalists for the Coach of the Year award.

Warren Henry Auto Group and Tournament of Champions Inc. will announce its second annual South Florida Football Player of the Year on Monday morning at 11 a.m. at the Warren Henry Jaguar Showroom in North Miami. The five finalists invited are North Miami senior quarterback Hilton Joseph; Booker T. Washington senior quarterback Maurice Alexander; Carol City senior athlete Rashad Fenton; Central junior linebacker Donavan Thompson; and Coral Gables junior linebacker Shakur Cooper.
