QB Ryan Stanley, defense carry unbeaten Flanagan Falcons into state semifinals

Flanagan punched its ticket to the state final four and remained unbeaten with a 32-0 victory over Wellington on Friday.

The Falcons (13-0) shut down the Wolverines (11-2) throughout with tight pass coverage, physical play and a relentless pass rush, forcing four turnovers and recording a handful of sacks.

Now, the Falcons are just one win away from the state championship game and will take on Columbus in the state semifinals.

“It hasn’t quite hit me yet,” Flanagan coach Devin Bush said. “It’s unbelievable to be in this spot and have the opportunity to make it this far. It’s great to see them accomplish this goal.”

Quarterback Ryan Stanley shined for the Falcons, throwing three touchdown passes and rushing for another score. Stanley finished the game completing 21 of his 28 passes for 360 yards and rushing for another 64 yards on nine carries.

“He’s a special guy,” Bush said of Stanley. “I love that kid; he leads this team, and they feed off his energy.”

The Falcons opened the scoring with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, when Stanley completed a short pass to wide receiver Emonee Spence, who broke a couple tackles and dashed to the end zone for a 39-yard score.

Stanley hit Spence again in the second quarter with a 53-yard pass that put the Falcons inside the 10-yard line and set up a 3-yard rushing TD for running back Arkeem Granger.

Ahead 12-0 at the half, the Falcons blew the game open in the third quarter when Stanley completed two touchdown passes to wide receiver Isaiah Collins for 50 yards and 39 yards, and fooled the Wellington defense on fourth-and-short with a bootleg run that resulted in a 30-yard rushing score.

The Flanagan defense helped set up two of those third-quarter scoring plays with interceptions.

Wellington quarterback Shannon Patrick, who came into the game with just eight interceptions all season, threw three picks against the Falcons defense and was held to just 133 yards passing.

“We want to make sure we are the most physical team out here on the field each and every night that we play,” Bush said. “That’s what we pride ourselves on.”
