Calvary Christian holds on to win Southeast Conference title
Calvary Christian’s fast-paced offense built a 22-point second-quarter lead, then used ball control and timely stops by the defense to hold off Coral Springs Charter 31-20 and capture the Southeast Conference (independent) title at FAU stadium on Saturday.
Massi Gamble led Calvary Christian (11-0) with 107 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns, 81 of the yards coming in the second half. The defense had three first-half takeaways that led to three touchdowns.
It was the Eagles’ second victory over the Panthers (8-3), having edged them 26-25 five weeks ago in the regular season.
Calvary took a 28-13 lead at halftime, but Charter opened the scoring just one minute into the game when David Vozzola connected with Calen Carson on a 45-yard touchdown pass.
Calvary followed with big plays from Parker Collins on consecutive special teams plays. First, he blocked the extra-point kick; then on the ensuing kickoff he went 97 yards on the return for Calvary’s first of four touchdowns in a row. Collins (five catches, 97 yards) also scored on a 51-yard TD pass from Nick Holm, followed by touchdown runs of 3 and 9 yards by Gamble for a 28-6 lead with 5:33 left until halftime.
The Panthers closed the gap to within two scores with 11 seconds remaining, scoring on lineman Marcos Hilera’s 1-yard plunge to complete a 14-play, 80-yard drive.
After Calvary took a 31-13 lead on Austin Gunderson’s 35-yard field goal with 3:30 left in the third quarter, Charter answered with an eight-play, 70-yard drive capped by Carson’s 10-yard run. Then the teams played to a scoreless fourth quarter.
