Sophomore Marta Ciesla and seniors Carolyn Chaney and Lindsey Swartz won individual gold medals to lead the Pine Crest girls team to second place Saturday in the Class 1-A state swimming and diving championships.

Ciesla swept the 50- and 100-freestyle races and helped relay teams take a silver and bronze medal. Swartz won the 100 breaststroke.

Chaney, meanwhile, was only the fifth girl in Florida high school history to win the diving championship four years in a row.

Pine Crest diving coach Janet Gabriel marveled at Chaney’s accomplishment, noting that she won her fourth gold medal only six months after shoulder surgery from an injury unrelated to diving.

Pine Crest swept the diving titles as junior Austin Fields successfully defended his title.

While Chaney could have missed her last dive entirely and still won the gold, Fields won with his final dive — an inward 11/2 somersault. Gabriel said Fields outperformed Frostproof senior Roby Costine on the last dive, though Fields’ had a lower degree of difficulty.

Ciesla, who won gold in the 100 freestyle last year but only silver in the 50 freestyle, said, “It feels pretty great” to win golds in both races this year.

She said the difference from last year’s was, “I needed to learn to get more excited about it.”

Sagemont won its first-ever gold medals when senior Mateo Gonzalez, a transfer from Mexico, won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly.

Those golds propelled Sagemont to ninth place in the boys’ team rankings.

Jacksonville Bolles boys won their 27th consecutive team championship. Bolles girls won their 24th team title in a row.

Gonzalez, who has committed to Texas A&M, said he was determined.

“I just went for it,” he said. “I really wanted it, so I put my head down and didn’t look back.”
