St. Thomas Aquinas football No. 2 in national polls

St. Thomas Aquinas held steady near the top, and Plantation American Heritage and Flanagan continued to ascend in the latest football national rankings.

Aquinas remained No. 2 in both the USA Today and MaxPreps polls, and No. 3 by PrepNation following its win over Plantation.

American Heritage cracked the top 10 in two polls.

The Patriots moved up to No. 9 in PrepNation’s Top 25 and to No. 10 in USA Today’s Super 25 following its 44-23 win over Northwestern. MaxPreps moved the Patriots up one spot to No. 18, and dropped idle Flanagan to No. 8. The Falcons did move up three spots to No. 16 in USA Today’s poll.

The American Heritage football team got 119 rushing yards, highlighted by a 75-yard touchdown and a scintillating 91-yard return for another touchdown from Khalil Herbert, in a 44-23 victory over Miami Northwestern.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Jhakari Harrison, Coconut Creek, football: Harrison completed 13 of 26 passes for 250 yards and threw seven touchdown passes to lead the Cougars to a 46-21 win over Boyd Anderson.

Justin Shiao, North Broward, boys’ golf: Schiao was the medalist (35) and led the Eagles over Park Vista 153-163.

Teddrick Moffett, Deerfield Beach, football: The senior threw two touchdowns and ran for a third in the first quarter as the Bucks beat Blanche Ely 30-12.

Michael Kennedy, Pine Crest, boys’ cross-country: Kennedy finished first in a school-record 16:20 to lead the Panthers to second place at the Horse Park Invitational.

Haley Batchelor, Calvary Christian, girls’ volleyball: Batchelor had 13 kills, three blocks and three points to lead the Eagles over Westminster Academy.

Amanda Okulanis, Douglas, girls’ golf: Okulanis was medalist (39) and led the Eagles over Cardinal Gibbons 171-266.

Natasha Testa, Cooper City, girls’ swimming: Testa won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly to lead the Cowboys past Flanagan and McArthur.

Michael Kennedy, Pine Crest, boys’ cross-country: Kennedy finished first in a school-record 16:20 to lead the Panthers to second place at the Horse Park Invitational.

Katherine Dudra, South Broward, girls’ volleyball: Dudra had 12 kills, 11 points and nine digs to lead the Bulldogs over Hollywood Hills.

Thomas Morin, Cypress Bay, boys’ cross country: Morin (17:25) took first to lead the Lightning over Douglas, Pines Charter, South Plantation, Flanagan, Monarch, Hollywood Hills and Plantation.

Emily Magnuson, South Plantation, girls’ volleyball: Magnuson had 17 points and 12 aces to lead the Paladins over Stranahan.

The Jackson football team beat longtime rival Booker T. Washington for the first time since the school reopened as a high school in 1999 with a narrow 38-35 victory. Quarterback Desmond Phillips led the Generals, throwing for 287 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 148 yards and another touchdown.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

E.J. Thomas, Edison, football: Thomas ran for 220 yards in three quarters during a 54-7 win for the Red Raiders over Ferguson.

Javier Zuniga, Sunset, football: Zuniga scored all three of Sunset’s touchdowns and ran for 186 yards in a 21-0 win over South Miami.

Nikkia Benitez, Westminster Christian, volleyball: Benitez had 53 kills to help the Warriors beat Orlando Lake Highland Prep, Lakewood Ranch, Winter Park and Key West.

Bianca Mengotti, Gulliver, volleyball: Mengotti had 15 kills and 14 digs to lead the Raiders to a five-set win over Ransom.

Carlin Berryhill, Coral Reef, boys’ cross-country: Berryhill ran a time of 16:30.57 to win the King of the Hill Invitational individual title.

Natalie Varela, Gulliver, girls’ cross-country: Varela ran a time of 19:23.61 to finish a Dade-best second at the King of the Hill Invitational.

Adrian Aguilar, Doral, boys’ swimming and diving: Aguilar won the 100 fly and 100 back to lead the Firebirds to a win over Westminster Christian.

Daniella Filette, South Dade, girls’ swimming and diving: Filette won the 100 fly and 100 back to lead the Bucs over Varela.

Scott Martinez, Gulliver, boys’ golf: Martinez shot a 76 to lead the Raiders to a meet win over Ransom and Westminster Christian.
