While host Boca Raton swept the boys’ and girls’ team swimming titles at the Region 3-4A championships on Saturday, St. Thomas Aquinas and Douglas had their moments, too.

St. Thomas captured second place in boys’ team scores and third in girls’ team scores, while Douglas finished fifth overall in both.

“I was really nervous but tried to not panic,” said Douglas’ Tristan Celestin, who won the 100 breaststroke. “I stuck with what my coach said the whole race and came out with a win, so I’m pretty happy. We did really well for a little public school with not a lot of kids.”

St. Thomas won five events, including Caitlin Ahern taking the 100 breastroke in 1:04.06.

“I think that’s a really good place for me to be going into states,” Ahern said. “I was thinking about being long and smooth the whole time. A person or two on our team is sick. We had ups and downs throughout the meet. Overall, I’m proud of how we did and stuck together as a team.”

Karlee Price won diving, and Esteban Velasquez won the 200 individual medley for the Raiders. Velasquez, Andrew Szatkowski, Gabriel Perez Silva and Kearn Kurbanali teamed up to win the boys’ 200 freestyle relay.

▪ Region 4-3A championships — The Belen boys’ swimmers set the pace in the first event at the Region 4-3A championship, and that momentum carried on throughout the meet held at Ransom Everglades on Saturday afternoon.

The 200 medley relay team, comprised of Alejandro Carriazo, Bernardo Lima, Max Garcia del Pozo and Daniel Simpson finished in 1:39:52 and helped carry the Belen boys to a total of 381.5 points to prevail against the top talent in the region.
