American Heritage in national spotlight after beating IMG

Plantation American Heritage took down the nation’s second-ranked team over the weekend.

Less than two days later, the Patriots found themselves a spot in the top 25 nationally in multiple polls.

Although American Heritage’s thrilling 19-7 victory over Bradenton IMG Academy came in a preseason classic, the Patriots ascended to No. 18 in USA Today’s latest Super 25 rankings Monday. IMG, previously ranked second, fell to No. 22.

The Patriots are also ranked No. 21 in the National High School Football Top 100, jumping 18 spots from No. 39.

Heritage, the two-time defending Class 5A state champions, became the fourth South Florida team to crack the national top 25 in more than one poll.

IMG’s loss also cleared the way for Miami Central to move up to No. 2 and St. Thomas Aquinas to No. 4 in USA Today’s Super 25. Both teams are also in HSFB’s top five with Aquinas ranked third and Central is fifth. MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25 has Central ranked No. 2 and Aquinas No. 8.

Flanagan is ranked No. 9 by MaxPreps, No. 25 by USA Today and No. 26 in the HSFB, which also has Hallandale (No. 48) and Coconut Creek (No. 55).

American Heritage stunned IMG with a stellar overall defensive effort that was capped by Nick Eubanks’ 90-yard interception return for a touchdown on the game’s final play.

The Patriots will have a chance to further add to their national resume over the next couple of weeks. Heritage takes on Stephenson (Ga.) as part of the third annual Battle of the Borders Classic - a four-team, Florida vs. Georgia event Saturday in Atlanta. The Patriots play in the final game of the day at 8:30 p.m.

Coconut Creek leads off the event with an 11:45 a.m. clash with Marist High that will be followed by Hallandale taking on Cedar Grove at 2:30 p.m.

On the following Saturday, Sept. 5, Heritage will host DeMatha Catholic, ranked No. 5 by USA Today at its home field at 6 p.m.

DeMatha is involved in its own tussle this Saturday as it plays Miami Central in a top five clash at noon in Landover (Md.) in a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN.

That game is one of three games ESPN is broadcasting this weekend involving Dade and Broward teams.

Booker T. Washington is putting its 41-game winning streak on the line Friday night at 8 p.m. when it travels to face St. Thomas Aquinas. Tickets for the game are $10 and go on sale Tuesday at both schools.

ESPNU will broadcast Miramar’s clash with IMG Academy Sunday at 2 p.m. The Patriots beat American 34-6 in a preseason game this past Saturday.
