St. Thomas Aquinas soccer sweeps regionals, ready to chase more state titles

Special to the Miami Herald

St. Thomas Aquinas’ boys’ and girls’ soccer teams each moved a step closer to playing for state championships as each rolled to victories in their respective Region 4-6A finals on Tuesday.

The Raiders boys needed overtime to overcome a stubborn Monarch side to prevail 2-0. Aquinas has recorded nine shutouts in their last 11 games.

Senior midfielder Felipe Tobon stepped up with a pair of assists sending the ball twice to the far post. The first allowed Tyler Hinkle to score with 3:52 left in the first overtime. Then with 3:20 remaining in the second overtime Tobon’s strike to the keepers’ right back post allowed senior Rayne Archuleta to score the Raiders (21-6) second OT goal to seal the win.

“It felt amazing after getting a yellow card near the end of the second half,” Tobon. “I got send off, got a fresh mind and never gave up and got two assists for my team.”

The victory extended the Raiders’ win streak to 10 games. Now they will face Land O’Lakes Sunlake in a state semifinal game on Monday at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand at 4.

Aquinas’ girls beat Cooper City 5-0 in their regional final as senior forward Madison McKeon scored a pair of first half goals to lead the Raiders.

It was their 15th shutout of the season, while outscoring their last five opponents 34-0.

Aquinas (21-2-1) will play Viera on Monday at 10 a.m. in DeLand. The Raiders will seek to win their first state championship since 2017. Overall, the Raiders have won a state record 15 championships since 1990.

The Raiders scored four first half goals with the first coming from Bianca Raskin in the seventh minute. Marisa Robinson added another goal five minutes later for 2-0 lead.

Then McKeon added her team leading 33rd and 34th goals of the season in the 25th and 35th minutes to basically seal the game in the opening half.

“I always try to get goals as fast as possible so we can really make a mark on our opponent,” McKeon said. “I think it’s important not only for the score for my team as a whole to get us super pumped.”
