North Broward Prep volleyball advances to first state final in 15 years
It had been 15 years since any North Broward Prep girls’ volleyball team had advanced to a state final four.
The way the Eagles played on Friday, they looked like state tournament regulars.
North Broward Prep had no trouble taking control of its Class 4A state semifinal match against Englewood Lemon Bay, scoring 18 of the match’s first 20 points and cruising to a three-set sweep (25-6, 25-15, 25-11) at Polk State College in Winter Haven.
The Eagles (25-2), who are the top seed in the bracket, will next vie for the school’s first ever state title in the sport when they take on Merritt Island on Saturday at 4 in the 4A final. Merritt Island advanced with a four-set win over Santa Rosa Beach South Walton.
North Broward Prep’s Yasmin Dias Tonon led the Eagles once again with 16 kills and four digs. Jayda Palumbo totaled 15 kills and three digs while Dasia Johnson had 11 kills and 11 digs.
North Broward Prep had made only one appearance in the state final prior to this, losing in the 2010 Class 3A championship match to Tampa Berkeley Prep.
