NSU University School routs Westminster Academy, plus regional golf results

for Miami Herald

NSU University School’s football team dealt with plenty of roster turnover coming into this season.

But the Sharks have learned how to develop new talent and remain consistent over the past three years.

And it’s made them a consistent state championship contender in the independent Sunshine State Athletic Conference.

For the third consecutive year, NSU University School is headed to the SSAC state semifinals following a 41-15 rout of Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy on Friday night at AutoNation Field in Davie.

The Sharks (8-4) will next hit the road to face Jupiter Christian (10-1) in the semifinals of the SSAC’s 11-man division next Friday at 7 at Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer High.

NSU University School lost to Jupiter Christian 42-28 in a preseason classic in August. But the Sharks, who lost 20 players either to graduation or transfers off a team that lost the SSAC state championship game, 49-42 in overtime, to Oviedo Master’s Academy last year, appear to be clicking at the right time.

“It’s exciting after the way we started the year,” NSU University School coach Mike Norman said. “It was like a rollercoaster with so many ups and downs, but we’re putting it all together now in all three phases and it’s the perfect timing for it.”

One of those young leaders is junior quarterback Jayden Miller, who threw three touchdown passes including two to sophomore Logan Lindsey Hartwig. Their second touchdown connection from 10 yards out early in the fourth quarter gave the Sharks a 26-7 lead and put the game out of reach.

Senior quarterback Cortland Brownfield threw two touchdown passes to lead Westminster Academy (8-3), which eliminated University in the SSAC semifinals two seasons ago. But three second-half turnovers proved too costly for the Lions.

University School jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter on Miller’s first two touchdown tosses and a field goal by Raul Leyva.

The Lions took advantage of an interception by senior Chop Donald and picked up their first points on a 2-yard touchdown run by junior Rashard Lewis. After recovering an onside kick, Westminster had a chance to make it a one score game. But kicker Drew Barbar missed wide right from 42 yards away.

The Lions appeared to start the second half with a bang when junior DJ Pierce returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. But the play was negated by an illegal block penalty.

Two plays later, Colin Allen intercepted Brownfield to flip the momentum back in the Sharks’ favor.

Senior Tristan Ayala would later recover a fumble for University School and sophomore Kai Starks, the son of former Miami Hurricanes and NFL star Duane Starks, also intercepted Brownfield.

After missing a pair of field goals, Leyva connected from 30 yards out to push University School’s lead to 20-7. In the final minutes of the game, junior Brandon Williams Jr. and sophomore Madan Patel each scored rushing touchdowns.

“A lot of this was just building with each other,” Norman said. “It took us some time to gel and we dealt with the weather and stuff early, but now we’ve had more time with each other and it’s showing.”
