Dillard’s Coleman dominates; Flanagan and Miramar split boys’ title at BCAA track meet
Make no doubt about it. This was Christiana Coleman’s night.
The senior distance runner from Dillard, competing in her final BCAA Track and Field Championships made it a memorable one.
Already with a Class 3A state cross country title as senior, the University of Florida signee added four victories, crossing the finished line first in the 4x800 relay (8:58.74), 800 (2:12.45), 1600 (4:58.61) and 3200 (11:20.16) races.
Those results helped the Dillard girls to their second consecutive team title with 182 points, far ahead of runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas (107.5 points).
On the boys’ side, Flanagan and Miramar tied for the team title with 69 points.
Flanagan, up by eight points over Miramar with the 4x400 relay and pole vault results pending, won the relay as Jonathan Carter as the anchor leg holding off the Miramar runner to earn 10 points.
“We were a little savvy because we had a false start in the 100,” Flanagan coach Jessica Carter said. “The boys worked together and trained hard and they’ve been wanting this for a long time.”
Patriots senior Elijah Smith (11-11.75) was victorious in the pole vault as the 4x400 relay ended to even the final score. Smith, who also was the winner in the long jump (24-2.25), was named the boys’ MVP of the meet.
Coleman finished her high school career with a combined 11 individual and relay BCAA titles.
“This is my last year and I was just trying and making sure I go out the way I wanted,” said Coleman, who was named the girls MVP of the meet “I wanted to continue to due the best I can.
“In running four races it was important that I cooled down between races and be ready at the start line for the next race. I wanted to make sure I had enough energy by running races back-to-back.”
Coleman also won the 1,600 meters for the fourth consecutive time in the BCAA meet.
“She wanted to finish her senior year with a bang,” Dillard track coach Davidson Gill said. “She did a great job in this environment and I’m proud of her. I put her in the 800 to get points and she ended up running personal best as she did in the 1600.”
Alexia Reid also played a big role for the Panthers with victories in the 100 hurdles (14.03) and 400 hurdles (1:00.24). Overall, the Dillard girls won 11 events.
Patchnalle Compere of Northeast was victorious in the 100 (11.65) and 200 (24.30).
Mitchell Beckford of South Broward had a strong night with victories in the 100 (10.64) and 200 (21.76).
Shaquille Young, a senior from Piper was also a double winner as he won the shot put (51-1.50) and discus (149-8).
