Ty Strafaci shot 72-67, 139 to win medalist honors and lead the American Heritage boys’ golf team to its first Tournament of Champions title at the Providence County Club. Strafaci, the fourth consecutive Heritage player to earn medalist, helped the Patriots beat defending state champions Ponte Vedra (2A), Lakewood Ranch (3A) and Lake Mary Prep (1A).
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Nikki Lyons and Kara Mason, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ volleyball: Lyons and Mason each had 10 kills to lead the Raiders to an upset of No. 1 seed Wheaton St. Frances and fifth place in the “Challenge” Tournament Gold Division in Chicago.
Jessica Nava, Westminster Academy, girls’ swimming: Nava won the 100 fly and 100 backstroke to lead the Lions over South Florida HEAT, Coral Springs Christian and American Heritage.
Maria Amon, Pines Charter, girls’ volleyball: Amon had 23 points, six digs and 21 assists to lead the Jaguars over South Plantation.
Brett Israel, Douglas, football: Israel scored on a 10-yard touchdown run in overtime to lift Douglas (4-1) over District 11-8A rival South Plantation 27-20.
Tsion Yared and Julia Montgomery, Pine Crest, girls’ cross-country: Seventh-grader Yared won the flrunners.com Race of Champions individual title, and Montgomery finished sixth to lead the Panthers to the girls’ team title.
Joel Lacy, Calvary Christian, boys’ cross-country: Lacy finished seventh (16:24) in the flrunners.com Boys’ Race of Champions.
Torrance Gibson and Travis Jackson, American Heritage, football: Gibson threw for three touchdowns, ran for two others and Jackson rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown to help the Patriots (3-2) bounce back from a loss to Daytona Beach Mainland with a 45-16 victory over District 16-5A rival Miami Jackson.
Meg Collier, Pompano Beach, girls’ swimming: Collier won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle to lead the Tornadoes over Deerfield Beach and Coral Springs.
Zach Smith, Pine Crest, football: Smith threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns to lead Pine Crest over Palm Beach Benjamin 35-10.
