University of Maryland signee Alex Tumminello scored three first half goals as the St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ lacrosse team (20-0, No. 1 in the FHSAA Florida South Laxpower Poll) staved off visiting Naples Barron Collier 12-10 victory in a third-round state play-in game.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Joey Hennessey, Monarch, baseball: Hennessey threw a two-hit shutout in five innings to help the Knights (20-3) claim their first 20-win season with a 10-0 victory over Fort Lauderdale 10-0 in the District 14-7A championship game.

Sydney Bates, Western, softball: Bates, picked up the victory with seven strikeouts and hit a home run with two RBI to lead the Wildcats (19-8) over Taravella 6-3 in the 8A regional Quarterfinals.

Phillip Lee, Boyd Anderson, boys’ track: Lee won the high jump, long jump and finished second in the 100 to lead the Cobras to the Region 4-3A title.

Kayla Scaperrotta, Coral Springs Charter, softball: Scaperrotta had two hits, a RBI and a run scored to lead the Panthers (25-0-1, No. 1 in the Class 4A state poll) past King’s Academy 8-0 in the Class 4A Regional quarterfinals.

Luis Almanzar, American Heritage, baseball: Almanazar sparkled in the field and drove in two runs as the Patriots beat archrival Archbishop McCarthy 9-2 for the District 16-5A title, ending the Mavericks’ seven year reign as district champions.

Ebony Brown, Westminster Academy, girls’ track: Brown won the 100, 200, long jump and led the winning 400-meter relay team at the Region 4-1A championships.

Antwuan Musgrove, Hallandale, boys’ track: Musgrove won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles to lead the Chargers to the Region 4-2A title.

Ambresha Long, Coconut Creek, flag football: Long had two receiving touchdowns to lead the Cougars (10-0) over Taravella 26-0.
