Pines Charter basketball star Haanif Cheatham expects big things next season
Following up his Florida Dairy Farmer’s Class 6A Player of the Year award with a FABC/Source Hoops first-team selection has Pines Charter junior Haanif Cheatham thinking even bigger next season.
Cheatham said he expects to be on the Florida Mr. Basketball and McDonald’s All-American radar by the end of his senior season, given the off-season regimen he expects to embark on.
“Winning Florida Mr. Basketball, getting a state championship and making the McDonald’s team, that would be a huge exclamation point on my high school career,’’ Cheatham said. “Just thinking about the McDonald’s team gives me chills. I will be working 24 and 7 to achieve those goals.”
A 6-foot-5 ESPN four-star prospect, Cheatham averaged 26.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists, highlighted by four triple-doubles to lead Pines Charter (18-6) to the regional final.
Cheatham finished fifth in the voting for Mr. Basketball, an award that went to Lake Highland Prep senior Joel Berry II, a North Carolina recruit, for a record third time.
American Heritage 6-10 senior Drake LaMont, the Class 5A Player of the Year who led the Patriots to their first state title, finished eighth in Mr. Basketball voting.
