More GIRLS’ GOLF
The St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ golf team won the District 12-8A semifinals, edging out Santaluces, Park Vista and Boca Raton, among others, to keep its season alive.
As a team, St. Thomas shot a 323, placing it ahead of second-place Santaluces (381). Park Vista rounded out the top three with an overall score of 394.
The Raiders used the stellar performance of freshman Julia Matzat to cruise to victory. Matzat shot a 2-under-par 70 to lead all individuals. Her performance earned her the title of regional champion.
“She went from an 85 in districts to a 70 in regionals and she’s just a freshman,” coach Ed Waters said of Matzat. “Her performance was awesome.”
Ariana Garcia followed suit for the Raiders, shooting an 80, and Madison Riordan shot an 83.
St. Thomas Aquinas will now begin preparations to play in the state tournament, which will be held Nov. 4-6 at Las Colinas Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills.
“We feel that we can compete with anyone there,” Waters said. “We have played the best competition down here and we hope to have our best two matches when we go up there.”
