Pine Crest basketball standout Vrankovic commits to Duke

It appears Pine Crest’s Antonio Vrankovic will have the opportunity to fill the void left by Jahlil Okafor at Duke as the 6-11 center verbally committed to the national champion Blue Devils on Wednesday.

Vrankovic, who is expected to sign with Duke on April 30, tweeted: “Proud to announce that I’m committing to Duke University!”

The ESPN three-star prospect — and son of former NBA player Stojko Vrankovic — averaged 28 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks for the Panthers this past season. Vrankovic’s most prolific scoring game came against Taravella, when he poured in a career-high 55 points to tie the school record set by current Phoenix Suns guard Brandon Knight.

The University of Miami reportedly made a late push to get Vrankovic, but Vrankovic was smitten with Duke during an unofficial visit last month. A two-time Class 4A-2A All-Broward first-team selection, Vrankovic is Duke’s third commitment in the 2015 class, joining highly touted guard Luke Kennard (Franklin, Ohio) and power forward Chase Jeter (Las Vegas Bishop Gorman).

SIGNINGS

Former Miami High guard Amanda Mendoza, a freshman this past season at St. Petersburg College, has signed with Division I Troy University. Mendoza helped St. Petersburg to a second place finish in the Southern Conference and was named first team All-Conference this past season, averaging nine points and a team-best 2.1 assists per game. A four-year starting point guard at MHS, Mendoza led the Stingarees to the Class 8A state championship as a senior.
