Cypress Bay tennis teams roll into state tournament

Cypress Bay’s boys and girls looked focused Thursday toward their goal of bringing home a state tennis championship.

The Lightning swept Krop 5-0 in both of its regional final matches to clinch berths at next week’s Class 4A state tournament in Altamonte Springs.

Cypress Bay’s girls are aiming for a second consecutive state title. The boys, a runner-up last season, are vying for a second state title in three seasons. Both are considered strong favorites.

Chris Morin edged Krop’s Ariel Hollender, who was filling in at No.1 singles for Krop’s usual No.1, Arman McLean, who missed the game because of illness. Morin’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win set the tone for the Lightning. Michael Plutt, Carlos Moreno, Scott Plutt and Robert Slutsky all swept their matches in two sets. Shene Disbergen, Sibel Can, Michelle Eisenberg, Samara Eisenberg and Laura Herrera each won their matches in straight sets for the girls.

Dr. Krop advanced Naiya Oden for singles and doubles, where she will team with Michelle Quilici for the individual state tournament. On the boys’ side, Krop advanced No.1 player McLean for singles and doubles with Hollender after winning district titles last week.

“I expected the girls to do well, but for the boys it has been a special season,” Ransom coach Peter Lehmann said. “The guys have had a lot of injuries to overcome.”

The Raiders girls’ team looks to win state for the second consecutive season and the third time in four years. The boys’ team went to state last season, finishing fifth.

On Thursday, Ransom’s Daniela Lopez, Heather Boehm, Vivien Fernandez-Ravelo and Marina Pataro each won in straight sets.

On the boys’ side, Grant Dill defeated MAST’s Eugenio Alvarez in a tiebreak set, and teammates Samuel Rubell, Patrick Visan and Rowan Daiksel won in straight sets. Richard Torres (10-2) beat John Michael Holtmann in a tiebreak set for MAST’s lone point.
