McArthur falls to Wellington in Class 8A state semifinal

McArthur has progressed into one of Broward County’s top-tier teams over the past two years.

But the Mustangs weren’t able to make their debut at the state final four a memorable one.

McArthur couldn’t find a way to slow down a fast and skilled Wellington squad and fell 76-69 in a Class 8A state semifinal at The Lakeland Center.

“We knew Wellington was very athletic and they weren’t ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 8A for nothing,” McArthur coach Warren Gale said. “We should have taken more advantage of our size and we failed to do that.”

After winning only two regional playoff games in its program’s history, McArthur (28-8) won two last year to advance to the regional finals. This season, the Mustangs won three more to clinch their first trip to Lakeland.

But a veteran group that graduates nine seniors couldn’t find the shooting touch Thursday night.

McArthur shot only 34.7 percent (26 of 75) and relinquished the lead in the second quarter for good as Wellington (28-3) shot an even 50 percent (25 of 50). The Mustangs didn’t only struggle from long range (3 of 12 from three-point range), but missed several close-range shots in the paint throughout the game.

“One of the things we talked about was shooting,” Gale said. “This arena is historically tough to shoot in. We couldn’t afford to settle for long-distance, tough shots. Right in front of the rim, we were getting opportunities but we just weren’t finishing.”

McArthur’s guards didn’t get into a rhythm until late in the second half, finishing with only three assists as a team. The Wolverines drove to the basket with relative ease throughout the contest and distributed the ball well with 15 assists overall.

Senior guard Derric Jean, a Louisiana Tech signee, and sophomore guard Terrell Turner each had 21 points, but couldn’t slow down Wellington, which had four players score in double figures. Wellington took a double-digit lead in the first two minutes of the third quarter and used an 11-0 surge early in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

“The third quarter really hurt us,” Gale said. “We came out of the locker room really flat. Our guards pushed the tempo for us but they didn’t really start to play well and pick it up until the second half. For three years, I’ve had a lot of these guys including nine seniors and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

MCA (28-8): Rivera-Vega 11, Noel 9, Tejada 2, Turner 21, Jean 21, Cambridge 5. WEL (28-3): Kwiatek 10, Dieudonne 22, Bureau 2, Gates 14, Frazier 19, Chen-Young 3, Brown 6. Half: WEL 35-29. Three-pointers: Frazier 2, Rivera-Vega, Jean, Cambridge, Gates. Rebounds: Jean 9. Assists: Frazier 7. Steals: Jean 3. Blocks: Kwiatek, Brown 3.

FOOTBALL

In the hopes of returning its program to a state championship level, Chaminade-Madonna announced Thursday it has hired longtime St. Thomas Aquinas assistant coach Jason Milgrom as its new football coach.

Milgrom, a coach at Aquinas for the past 13 seasons, was a part of five state championship teams which two national title seasons. As co-offensive coordinator in recent years, Milgrom’s offenses put up huge numbers including a 45-point per game average this past season as the Raiders won the Class 7A state title.

Milgrom was an All-State offensive lineman for Aquinas in high school and part of the school’s first state championship team in 1992.

Chaminade-Madonna, which went 3-7 this past season, won state titles in 2003 and 2005, but has not won a playoff game since 2009.

"I am extremely humbled by the opportunity that Chaminade-Madonna has given me and my family," Milgrom said. "We cannot wait to get to work."

WRESTLING

District 15-3A — Southwest won the District 15-3A wrestling championship at Coral Park High School.

The Eagles advanced 12 wrestlers to next weekend’s regional tournament at Reagan. Of those 12, five won a district title, four were runners-up and three finished in third place.

"This sport is always filled with ups and downs," Southwest Coach Joel Mendez said. "We lost a couple of matches that we wished hadn’t happened, but, overall, we’re pleased."

Braddock finished second, 54.5 points behind Southwest. Columbus finished third and was led by 220-pounder Kyle Mann, who at 32-0 was the only unbeaten wrestler at the tournament.

District 14-1A — When you’ve won 27 of the previous 28 district titles, making it 28 out of 29 was not going to shock anyone and that was definitely the case when the Cardinal Gibbons wrestling team ran away from the competition, easily winning the District title at Calvary Christian in Ft. Lauderdale.

The defending 1A state champion Chiefs acted like it as 11 of their 14 wrestlers won their respective weight classes. Gibbons was led by Eric Bylich (145 lbs), Alex Lopouchanski (160 lbs.) and Nino Sannasardo (182 lbs.) who each remained undefeated moving their individual records to 49-0 on the year.

About the only drama came in the final match in the 285 lbs. division when, trailing by one point with less than 20 seconds left, Calvary Christian’s Dalton McClain thrilled the home crowd when he reversed Gibbons’ Sean Walker for two points and an 8-7 win.

The only other two non-Gibbons winners were Raiden Johnson of Coral Springs Charter who won the 106 lbs. division and Bradley Clement of Plantation American Heritage who moved his record to 22-1 by winning the 220 lbs.

“We got done what we needed to get done,” said Gibbons head coach Frank Pettineo. “We were looking to take 10 to 11 firsts which we did and now we get ready for regionals next week.”

Gibbons will host the Region 4-1A tournament next Friday and Saturday.

District 13-3A — The last time Tyler Sage wrestled for a championship medal he was defeated in the BCAA tournament by an unknown freshman. He vowed not to lose again.

Sage, 51-4, has not lost since that match and won the 138 pound district championship by defeating Marky Felix of McArthur 4-1. His Cypress Bay Lightning teammates won the overall team title with an astounding 262.5 points. Cooper City finished a distant second with 116 points.

"That match motivated me to not want to lose again. I did not like the way I felt inside," said Sage who will attend Arizona State on a wrestling scholarship. "I knew coming into this match that I had to be smart and quick to win. I never let him into the match."

South Plantation placed its first district champion in six years as 145-pound wrestler Christopher Gruenwald defeated Javier Fuertes of Cypress Bay 3-1. Fuertes won the county title and was the favorite coming into the match.

"Chris showed everyone what he is capable of doing," said South Plantation coach Mike Davis. "Not many people thought that the kid could win, but pulled it off and is a district champion."
