Hialeah wins Mayor’s Cup against Miami Springs

Hialeah scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back as the T-Breds retained the Mayor’s Cup trophy with rival Miami Springs by defeating the Golden Hawks 18-2 on Saturday night at Milander Stadium.

Hialeah did most of its damage on the ground as running backs Rommeo Brown (125 on 14) and Bobby Nelson (86 on 10) combined for 211 yards on 24 carries. The T-Breds managed to overcome 16 penalties for 166 yards.

“A little sloppy for our first game out but we didn’t have the benefit of playing a Kickoff Classic which is where you get some of that stuff sorted out,” said Hialeah coach Steve Smith. “So overall I was relatively pleased and happy that we won. Still have a lot of things to work on including cutting down the penalties.”

It took Hialeah just five plays to go 62 yards on its opening drive of the game, Rommeo Brown going over from seven yards out of the wildcat formation to make it 6-0 following a failed two point conversion.

Just five plays into Springs’ first drive, quarterback Jacoby Clark underthrew a middle screen pass and defensive lineman Zario Dorismond picked it off and rambled 35 yards for the score and a 12-0 lead.

Despite a young lineup which starts just two seniors, Miami Springs actually turned things around for the remainder of the half as the Hawks put together three long drives. Springs scored on the first one but the touchdown was nullified by a penalty and two more sacks following forced a punt. Another drive reached the Hialeah 13 before a fumble ended that threat.

After Michael Cabrera sacked Hialeah quarterback DeAndre Miles in the end zone for a safety, which would be Springs’ only points of the night, the Hawks got a short field on the free kick but again turned the ball over.

Brown then bolted 52 yards for a score 2:14 before halftime and neither team scored in the second half.

“It was a lot of fun out there tonight,” said Brown. “We don’t rush for big yards unless the o-line is getting it done up front and that’s where it all started tonight. They all did a great job up front creating holes for me and Bobby (Nelson) to run through.”

▪  Norland 9, Jacksonville Ribault 6: Kevon O'Connor kicked through a 30-yard field goal with one second left in the fourth quarter to give Norland a season opening victory over Jacksonville Ribault Saturday night at North Miami Stadium.

"All that was going through my head was that I had to win the game for my brothers and make a field goal," O'Connor said. "I like the right side and practice from there a lot."

Norland's Alec Carr scored the lone first half touchdown on a three-yard quarterback sneak.

Ribault scored on a 27-yard pass to a wide open Rashad Flynn from Ryan Williams with 3:04 left in the game to even the score at 6-6. The extra point was missed wide left.

Terence Evans produced some of his biggest runs on the final drive and finished the game with 104 rushing yards. His runs and a 17-yard pass to Dave Richards set up O'Connor for the 30-yard attempt off the right hash. The kick sailed through the center of the uprights.

The Norland rushing game was one of few things going right in the first half with 111 total yards. The Vikings were flagged nine times for 85 yards and only passed for 11 yards. Ribault also showed signs of offseason rust with two for ten passing and four penalties.

"It was sloppy, but we did get a win," coach Daryle Heidelburg said. "The field goal was the decision I had to make. He kicked a very good ball."
