Columbus turns back Sunset in boys’ basketball Region 4-8A quarterfinal

The boys’ basketball regional playoffs opened a day early Wednesday night.

And Columbus looked eager to get under way, taking an early lead on host Sunset and later doing just enough to hold on for a 51-44 victory in a Region 4-8A quarterfinal at the Sunset gym.

Led by sophomore point guard Danny Vitiello, who went 10 of 13 from the free-throw line in the second half and finished with 19 points, the Explorers (17-9) won their first regional playoff game in three seasons.

Columbus will next either travel to South Miami or host Southridge in the regional semifinals Tuesday night at 7.

Sunset (13-10) won its first district championship in boys’ basketball in the school’s 37-year history last week and made its first regional appearance since 2004.

The game was played a day before the rest of the regional quarterfinal round due to renovations of the gym floor scheduled to start Thursday at Sunset.

“I thought our guys came out and established their game in the first half, but we didn’t embrace the moment,” Columbus coach Henry Lorenzo said. “I don’t know if we started scoreboard watching or not. But either way, give a lot of credit to Sunset and the turnaround they had this year.”

The Explorers led by as many as 16 points before Sunset pulled to within one point with under four minutes to go in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Knights’ guard Andy Salazar.

Columbus answered with 6-0 surge as Sunset was unable to answer on its two ensuing possessions.

Vitiello finished with 19 points, three assists and three steals. Senior forward Alex Vanzant finished with six rebounds, five blocks and six points.

Salazar, who led Sunset in scoring this season with 27.8 points per game, finished with 13 points Wednesday and junior guard Luis Veloz finished with 16 points.
