Nova routs South Broward in girls’ basketball

After their previous two matchups came down to the last possession, Tuesday night’s Region 4-7A semifinal between district rivals Nova and South Broward was supposed to deliver much of the same drama.

But Nova, still stinging from a two-point upset loss to the Bulldogs in the district final, would have none of it as the Titans walked into the South Broward gym and exacted a measure of revenge by delivering a 54-27 beatdown of the Bulldogs.

And with that, Nova (22-5) will get another shot at some revenge when the Titans travel to Palm Beach Lakes on Saturday for a regional final and chance at a third trip to the state final four in the past four years.

Lakes pulled off a 48-46 upset of Nova in last year’s region final.

The drama in Tuesday night’s contest did not last long. Leading 9-6, Nova went on a 15-0 run from midway through the first quarter to half way through the second to go up 24-6. That was that as the Titans, led by Rishonti Cowart, Deja Roberts and Kiani Lurry who had 13, 12 and 10 points, respectively, opened up a second-half lead as large as 30 points.

“Our main focus was to come out defensively and take the three-ball away from them from the beginning to see if they could do anything else, and that’s what we did,” Nova coach Jason Hively said. “I couldn’t ask for better execution on the defensive end but offensively as well. It all started on the defensive end and getting the girls to buy in and play team defense and trust each other. We’re where we want to be, and now we have an opportunity where we were last year, one win away from Lakeland and we’d like to get that tough loss back.”

South Broward finished 18-7.

Nova (22-5): Cowart 13, Roberts 12, Lurry 10, E. Gutierrez 8, Corazza 6, L. Gutierrez 3, R. Cowart 2. SB (18-7) Russell 7, Bell 6, Leaks 6, Walker 4, Sadaka 3, McClain 2 3-pointers: Roberts (2), L. Gutierrez, Cowart

▪ Region 4-3A semifinal — Miami Country Day 71, Palmer Trinity 30: Miami Country Day advances to the next round after beating Palmer Trinity in convincing fashion.

The Spartans jumped to an early lead and were in double digits before Palmer Trinity recorded a point.

The Spartans were led by eighth-grader Maria Alvarez, who recorded 18 points on six three-pointers.

The other standout was Spartan sophomore Channise Lewis, who contributed with 13 points and was the defensive standout.

This was Palmer Trinity coach James Valle’s farewell game with the Falcons. He has taken a job with Andrew Osbourne Academy in Ohio.
