Flanagan, Dillard advance to Big 8 title game

Mikiah Harrigan and Jennifer Oramas scored all of Flanagan’s third-quarter points in a 60-50 victory over Nova on Friday in a BCAA Girls Big 8 Basketball Tournament semifinal at South Plantation. Dillard dominated Piper 73-58 in the semifinal nightcap.

Harrigan, who had 20 points and 18 rebounds, banked in a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give the Falcons a 25-21 lead. The Falcons then went on a 15-2 run in the third quarter to take charge.

“We faced a lot of adversity,” Harrigan said. “We have a lot of trust in each other. We wanted to get more aggressive. They were getting in foul trouble in the second quarter, and we had to take them out.”

Oramas led the Falcons (19-5) with 23 points. Dymond Cogdell had 10 rebounds in the win.

“The last time we played Nova we lost by 30 points,” Oramas said. “We were not aggressive at all, and that’s what killed us. We played with so much heart and just played so much harder than them. That’s really what got us the W.”

Dillard’s defense dictated play in its decisive win. The Panthers pounded the Bengals in the paint, stripped ballhandlers and were led by Jamesha Paul’s 21 points and 15 rebounds. Jacaira Allen had 18 points and 17 rebounds, and Courtney Parson had 17 points in the win.

“We were so aggressive,” Dillard coach Marcia Pinder said. “They want to play. If they aren’t playing defense, they have to sit out.”

The Falcons will face the Panthers at 7 p.m. Saturday in the championship at South Plantation.

“We are looking forward to playing Dillard,” Oramas said. “We need to play harder and be ready for their defense.”
