The Miami Herald to honor Broward’s best at awards banquet
The Miami Herald will once again honor the best high school athletes in Broward County on Tuesday morning at its annual All-Broward Athletic Awards sponsored by Miami Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Baptist Health South Florida the Orange Bowl and the Florida Panthers.
The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Signature Grand in Davie and will once again honor excellence in 17 sports.
Broward County teams brought home an impressive 25 state championships this past season, along with numerous other individual titles.
The Herald will honor the Players and Coaches of the Year individually per sport as well as announce its Overall Athletes of the Year and the Overall Coaches of the Year.
The top athletic programs also will be honored with the Miami Herald's All-Sports Awards and Major Sports Awards.
The Herald’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award and Leo Suarez-Walter Krietsch Courage Award will be presented. The latter is handed out every year to one or more individuals with ties to the local athletic community that have exhibited extraordinary courage while handling adversity.
The Miami-Dade Awards ceremony will be held Thursday at 8 a.m. at Jungle Island in Miami.

BETHEL REMEMBERED
Funeral services have been for Charles Gilbert Bethel Sr. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Royal Funeral Services Inc. at 17475 NW 27th Ave. in Miami Gardens. Reflections will be received from 7-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m., at Mount Hermon AME Church at 17800 NW 25th Avenue in Miami Gardens.
Bethel, a former football coach at Miami High and Miami Jackson High schools and former principal at Booker T. Washington Middle, Miami Central High and North Miami Elementary School, passed away on Thursday due to complications from diabetes.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in memory of Charles Gilbert Bethel Sr. to the American Heart Association, 1101 Northchase Parkway, Suite 1, Marietta, GA 30067-6411 or to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
